Kohima: After the Thursday’s incident, where one Ngamto Konyak of Loakkun village under Mon district drowned in a river near Nagaland gate at Namtola, situation in Namsa under Mon district along Nagalang-Assam border continued to be tense.
According to sources here on Sunday, the incident reportedly took place after some Adivasi tea garden labourer, residing along Nagaland-Assam border, imposed an economic blockade against Mon district, demanding the release of one vehicle seized by unidentified persons last month.
As the agitators started pelting stones at the passersby, two Naga youth jumped into the river and tried to escape, but Ngamto Konyak drowned as he could not swim.
The NGOs from Tizit filed a complaint against the agitating leaders with Namtola police station, demanding Assam Police to arrest the culprits who pelted stones, leading to death of Ngamto and hand them over to them within 24 hours.
However, Assam Police failed to arrest the accused, who reportedly managed to escape.
The irate youths from the bordering villages gathered to march down to Namtola Police Station yesterday but the intervention of Konyak Union and elders brought the matter under control.
Meanwhile, night curfew from dusk-to-dawn under section 144 CrPC imposed by the Sivsagar District Magistrate of Assam in and around Tizit area, along the Nagaland-Assam border, further angered the agitated youths and student bodies.
However, sensing the situation, curfew was lifted within few hours, sources said. (UNI)
