TURA: Suspected GNLA militants kidnapped a villager and later executed him in the centre of Silkigre village, near Chokpot on Wednesday accusing him of being an extortionist who was allegedly using the outfit’s name.

The victim whose hands were tied from behind was killed in typical execution style by making him knell down, before the ultras opened fire. Four bullets pierced the victim’s body leading to his death.

A letter was left behind in which the militants mentioned the victim as Namseng alias Gobin Sangma. The letter was signed by the head of the execution squad Jack Marak of the GNLA.

The militant leader, Jack Marak, who was previously heading the outfit’s command in West Garo Hills was shifted out to Chokpot command to oversee the outfit’s area ‘domination’ in the remote region.

Meanwhile, shocked villagers of Silkigre and adjoining areas deny knowing the victim even after police teams visited the area. “No one has come forward to claim the true identity of the deceased. It is evident the villagers are very frightened,” said a police officer.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased could be from Jadigittim area of South Garo Hills who came down to settle in Chokpot area after getting married. He was reportedly involved in petty extortion which was brought to the notice of the GNLA who gave out their jungle punishment.

Militant groups in the region are known to be harsh on petty criminals who extort money in their organization’s name.
