Mawhati residents back Dorphang as candidate

 SHILLONG: The residents of Mawhati have backed former HNLC chief Julius Dorphang’s candidature from the constituency for the upcoming Assembly Elections in 2013.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, vice president, Mawhati Constituency Political Committee (MCPC), Dalhousie Laloo said that the residents of the constituency, which falls under Ri-Bhoi district, believed that Dorphang can can transform the constituency for the better.

“Our constituency has remained backward since long as all political leaders who contested from here cared little for the development of the area”, he said.

While pointing out the fact that former leaders failed to work for the constituency, he added that the residents have formed a committee to decide on the candidate who would represent the constituency.

The MCPC was formed on May 5 this year and two representatives from 38 polling stations are members of the committee. It may be mentioned that there are over 20,000 electorates in the constituency which comprises of the villages of Mawhati, Tyrso, Block I, Block II, Mawlasnai besides others.
