Local taxis with destination

Editor,

Some situations depict how far behind we are in our thinking and life styles. It hardly occurs to us that some change is needed so that it benefits the public. We cannot wait for Government to save us from the odd hassles all the time. In this internet age, at a click our virtual self may be in USA, but actually we are stuck in the jammed streets of Shillong. Eternal road blockades apart, there are other things that take a toll on daily commuters of the local taxis.

Taxis here ply on their whims with no designate routes. Hence we do not know which taxi plies on which route. Every day the harassed passenger needs to ask over 20/30 passing vehicles’ drivers before he/she can get hold of a cab to the right destination.

A good administration notices such glitches and rectifies them. Why can’t the District Transport Officer ask all the local taxis to compulsorily put up plates with names of places that their vehicles are plying to and from.

Taxis bound for Bishnupur can fix up a plate abbreviated to BSP, so that the passengers of Garikhana/Jhalupara/Iewduh etc would be saved the hassle of asking about the destination from those vehicles and vice versa.

To ease the plight of commuters I request the authorities concerned to kindly take this suggestions and do the needful.

Yours etc.,

Salil Gewali,

Kudos RBSU!

Editor,

The news item “RBSU demands Govt. College at Umsning” (May 18, 2012), is very heartening. The demand of the student body is a very genuine one. It has been a matter of great concern for the parents and guardians of Umsning and adjoining areas as well as of the whole of Ri-Bhoi district whose children want to pursue their higher education in Science Stream. Either these students have to opt for Arts or Commerce stream or migrate to Shillong or other cities looking for admission in colleges offering Science Courses. These few are the fortunate ones having good financial background and the rest have to succumb to the situation.

Now the Government of Meghalaya is all set to create new districts in the state. The decision is welcome. But after the creation of the new districts the Government tends to slowing down development after establishing office of the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, Block Development Office etc. This reflects that the Government is more concerned with accommodating its officers while forgetting the importance of establishing Government Colleges and Schools in each district since life without education is unimaginable.

As reported in the said news item, the RBSU had way back in 2007 placed before the Government their demand for introduction of Science Stream in the lone Ri-Bhoi College, but it really surprised us that Government slept over such a genuine demand of a student body. This reflects that our Government is least concerned with education of our children. In fact such a callous attitude had affected the future of many of our children who aspire to take up science courses. They had to sacrifice their dream and end up taking some other course. The people of Ri-Bhoi should question their elected representatives why they have not bothered to create the necessary educational infrastructure

I request our Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, Education Minister Dr RC Laloo and all the MLAs representing the people of Ri- Bhoi District to kindly consider the genuine student oriented demand of the RBSU. At the same time, I heartily thank the RBSU for taking up such a vital issue with the Government and thereby fulfilling a long-standing demand of the people of Ri-Bhoi and more particularly of Umsning and its adjoining areas.

Yours etc,

M. Syiem

Speak up, Dr. Henry

Editor,

The clarifications of the Administrator of Nazareth and Dr. Rangad’s may suffice their fraternity of brotherhood but lack clear cut answers to questions raised. Both of them were not present in the entire episode but only came later into the scene. The operating doctor has cut, taken his cut and left. Each one of them has done their part except one man, Dr. Henry. So, will you please speak up, Dr. Henry and tell us what really happened in the Sannjay Sharma episode? And this time, please, no sugar coated wordings and no history of your past good deeds but just the plain old truth.

Yours etc.

Education for all!

Editor

According to the Right to Education Policy, every child should be given equal rights where all the students are welcome to any institution whereas in St Anthony’s Higher Secondary school only the intelligent and genius are welcome. What about the children with average or low IQ? Where will they go? What does Don Bosco stand for? In the true sense it means for the poor and the needy, since Don Bosco himself dedicated his service to the boys with a vision to offer an education which values and nurtures the religions, spiritual, intellectual, moral, aesthetic, social and physical growth of each student. But as we see the reality today things are not happening they way they should. St Anthony’s stands for the genius, intelligent, rich and the beautiful. Surprisingly, the school which is one of the best known institutions in the state, cannot provide admission to its own pupils and only ( 15%-20%) were admitted. This proves that the school prefers to accepts students from other schools; it cannot accept brilliant student where other students who excel from other institutions with high percentage are admitted. The pursuit of excellence and commitment to learning by St.Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong cannot be termed as one of the best institutions in the state in the region as a whole.

Yours etc.,

Albery Jala,

Shillong
