Guwahati : It was a unique sort of tribute to Late Bhupen Hazarika as a total of 5,406 guitarists on Sunday strummed in harmony one of the timeless tunes of the colossal musician from the banks of Brahmaputra – “bristirno parore akhyansha janare ….” in the sprawling Sarusajai National Games Stadium in Guwahati much to the cheers of the thousands of audience to script a fresh chapter in the Limca Book of Records.
Jajabor, a sociocultural organization based in Assam, organised the event which saw the participation of guitarists from Assam and other parts of North East.
The guitars played the tunes of Bhupen Hazarika in a synchronised manner drawing applause from the audience as well as representatives of Limca Book of Records, who gave a provisional certificate to the event.
Chief adviser of Jajabor, Ankur Dutta said, “The event was organised to pay tribute to the cultural icon late Dr Bhupen Hazarika besides vying for a page in Guinness Book of Records. We have received a provisional certificate from Limca Book of Record’s representative Ismita Thomas who was present on the occasion.”
“We are grateful that over 5400 guitarists as well as a large audience responded to our call inspite of an inclement weather. We plan to organise more such events in future,” he said.
The organisers further stated that they plan to break the world record next year and enter their name into the Guinness Book of Records.
The current world record was made in Poland in 2009, when 6,346 guitarists played a tune together. At the event on Sunday, the guitarists broke the previous national record for the largest guitar ensemble which was created in Shillong in 2006 by 1,730 guitarists.
Bhupen Hazarika’s sister and revered singer Sudakshina Sharma witnessed the event along with a host of dignitaries at the sprawling stadium under an overcast sky. Emotions ran high in the atmosphere that reverberated with the melody of Bhupendra Sangeet.
