JOWAI: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) and the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) have resolved to conduct a joint visit to Khanduli bordering Meghalaya and Assam, pressurise both the state governments to resolve the border issues and to constitute a committee for maintenance of peace and harmony in the disputed territories.

The meeting held at Orchid Inn in Jaintia Hills district on Monday was attended by a team of eight members of the Karbi Students’ Association led by Bidya Sing Teron and around 15 JSU activists led by its president Elnathan Pale.

Briefing media persons after the meeting, Teron informed that the meeting was successful and meaningful. He informed that the meeting discussed on the border issues between Jaintia hills and Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

Teron hoped that the meeting will pave the way for a peaceful atmosphere in the border areas particularly in Khanduli and enable both the communities – Khasi-Pnars and Karbis – to live together in peaceful co-existence.

Both the students’ bodies also resolved to pressurise both the governments of Assam and Meghalaya to resolve the border issues as earliest possible by taking the people into confidence.

“We will again meet on June 11 after which we will send a joint memorandum to both the governments of Assam and Meghalaya,” Teron informed.

The JSU and KSA have also decided to constitute a committee to try to resolve any misunderstanding between the two communities. The proposed committee will also discuss and resolve any small dispute that emanates in the border areas so that people of both the communities may live peacefully.

Teron further informed that the committee will comprise leaders of the JSU and KSA and representatives from villages in both Jaintia Hills and Karbi Anglong districts.

The KSA also denied all allegations over the dismantling of a boundary pillar at Khanduli village and clarified that the uprooted pillars was not an inter-state boundary pillar but it was an NEC Sub-division pillar erected to divide the NEC between Karbi-Anglong and Jaintia hills.
