SHILLONG: Church leaders of Garo Hills, representing the three lakh and more Catholic faithful, have decided to organise Peace Rallies on June 16 to express resentment over the attempted abduction of Sister Rose Kayathinkara last month.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Bishop of Tura Rt. Rev. Andrew R. Marak said that the peace rallies will be organised with other Church denominations of the District.
The church leaders on Tuesday assembled at the Cathedral Hall in Tura to obtain first hand information of the abduction bid from Sr. Rose and Sr. Cicily of Mendipathar. They also took note of the demand notices served on Church members during the past few months.
As per the resolution of the assembly, it was decided that no money will be paid to the anti-social groups. The gathering also urged the authorities to bring the culprits to book without further delay.
Meanwhile, to gather support for the cause, a massive signature campaign, signed by all the students in Catholic Schools, parents and Church members would be collected and the same would be submitted to the Deputy Commissioners, the Chief Minister and the Governor of the state for immediate action on the matter.
The meeting was attended priests and religious representatives from the three Districts of Garo Hills concluded with an appeal to youth, not to join anti-social groups.
