Parliamentary panel satisfied with Assam findings

Guwahati: Visiting Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice on Friday expressed satisfaction on awareness of Citizen Charter Bill, infrastructure development of subordinate courts and status of women at workplace in Assam.

The Committee, chaired by Rajya Sabha member Shantaram Naik, is on a three-day tour of the state, ending tomorrow, and held discussions with the state government, members of the bar and corporate bodies like IOCL, Bongaigaon Refinery, Brahmaputra Board, OIL and Assam Ashok Hotel Corporation Ltd. Addressing a press conference here, Mr Naik said, ‘The object of the tour is to ascertain views of the people and stakeholders on three issues – Citizen Charter Bill, infrastructure development of subordinate courts and issues related to sQtatus of women in the matter of harassment at work place, their service conditions, etc.’

The Committee reached Guwahati after visiting Kolkata and Shillong and will leave for Imphal on Saturday.

The chairman, stating the progress of discussions with the stakeholders, said besides the state government, the Committee met members of the bar regarding the Citizens Charter Bill or the Right of Citizens for Time Bound Delivery of Goods and Services and Redressal of their Grievances Bill 2011.

On the subordinate courts in the state, he informed that 25 new Gram Nyalayas will be constituted in Assam shortly.

The total strength of judicial officers of subordinate courts in the state is 223 with 46 vacancies, which the state government has assured of filling up soon, he added.

Stating that there are over 2.40 lakh cases pending in lower courts, Mr Naik said the issues of appointment of more judges and constitution of holiday courts were discussed. He further said the state government has constructed eight multi-storied court buildings and 20 residential complexes during the last five years and the Central government has released over Rs six crore for setting up Fast Track courts in the state during 2005-11.
