48-hour bandh affects normal life

Itanagar: The 48-hour Arunachal Pradesh capital bandh, which began on Wednesday morning, affected normal life badly in the twin capital towns of Itanagar and Naharlogun.

Sporadic incidents of arson and stone pelting were reported from different parts of these twin capital towns.

The bandh was called by All Nyshi Youth Council (ANYC), Arunachal Pradesh Abo-Tani Clans and Arunachal Pradesh Youth Forum to protest the state government’s inaction to fulfill union’s charter of demands included raising age criterion for APST and OBC candidates, cancellation of land allotment to non-APST people and misrepresentation of the Nyishi tribe in GK book among others.

The bandh has started at 0500 hrs on Wednesday and will continue till early Friday morning.

One motor cycle has been burnt by some unidentified youths in the early hours of Wednesday on NH 52 (A) near Indira Gandhi Park here, police sources said.

The motorcyclist was coming from Naharlogun to Itanagar at around 0430 hours this morning when another vehicle carrying few unknown persons coming from opposite direction stop his motorcycle and assaulted him, police said.

Later, they burnt down his motorcycle. No arrest has been made in this connection, police added.

So far the bandh was normal and peaceful except, few minor stone pelting incidents were reported from different parts of these capital towns, sources said; adding police has detained five persons for interrogation from various parts of these twin cities.

State transport sources informed that the department had plied two buses in the morning with police protection only to bring incoming stranded passengers to Itanagar from Banderdewa check gate.

The administration has made elaborate security arrangements by deploying police and paramilitary forces in some suspected vulnerable points to avoid breaking of law and order situation.

All state and central government offices, educational institutions, banks, post-offices, shops and markets were remained closed in the twin capital cities of Itanagar and Naharlogun. The NH and other sectorial roads of the capital complex were looks like deserted as private and government vehicles including state transport buses were off the road, however, police patrolling and magistrate’s cars were seen plying occasionally on the streets to supervise security situation.

Meanwhile, capital district administration has declared the 48 hours capital bandh on June 13 and 14 as illegal under section 144 CrPC. (UNI)
