NONGSTOIN: Following indifferent attitude from the concerned authorities, the people of Siejlieh village under West Khasi Hills took upon themselves the responsibility to repair around 400 metres of water pipes that feed the village.

KSU vice president, Siejlieh unit, D Bani and B Marbaniang, who led the villagers in the repairing task, told reporters that road construction in the area had resulted in the destruction of the pipes.

For two months now, the pipelines lay in a state of disrepair, resulting in major water scarcity in the area.

“Pipelines, damaged on pretext of development , could be seen scattered at the site while some lay under the debris,” Bani said.

The villagers had also requested the PHE department to look into the matter but shortage of muster role meant that the villagers had to take the initiative to resolve the crisis, said Marbaniang.

Marbaniang along with the KSU vice president also condemned the ‘reckless attitude’ of the businessman Hammerless Roy Thabah, who was entrusted with the task of proper implementation of the project.

“Recently, the villagers had asked Thabah to make amends (for the damaged caused) but there has been no response,” sources said.

Meanwhile, Marbaniang informed that few PHE muster roles are also assisting the villagers in the repairing work.
