Shillong: Veteran State politician and HSPDP supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh has decided to extend his support to former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma in his bid to make it to Rashtrapati Bhawan.

“I have decided to support Purno since he is a political leader from the State. I strongly feel that he will be more in tune with the problems afflicting our State,” Lyngdoh said while speaking to reporters here on Wednesday.

The HSPDP supremo also informed that Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has sent him a letter with a request to support Pranab Mukherjee during the Presidential election.

However, it remains to be seen whether the other HSPDP legislator in the Assembly, Dr Advisor Pariong, would support Purno or not.

Sources say that since Pariong is reportedly seeking a Congress ticket for the upcoming 2013 Assembly election it is likely that he would support UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the President’s post.

Meanwhile, UDP leaders and members are scheduled to meet in the next few days to decide on whom to vote for in the July 19 Presidential election.

Party sources informed that Sangma had sent a letter to UDP President Dr Donkupar Roy on June 24 seeing the party’s support for his bid.

At the same time, party sources revealed that Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had also written a letter to the UDP president on June 21 seeking their support for UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee.

“The party would take a final call on the matter in the new few days,” Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong informed reporters here on Wednesday.
