Shillong: There is a lack of accountability on part of the political class which has resulted in misuse of power, encroachment on the rights of the people and corruption, said Nongkrem legislator Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit.

Basaiawmoit was speaking at the two-day national conference on ’60 years of the working of Parliamentary Democracy in India: Experience and Prospects’ at Synod College here on Wednesday.

“The lack of accountability on the part of the political class has led to the present situation where there has been a clamour for electoral reforms”, Basaiawmoit said.

The Nongkrem legislator added that India as a democratic country is challenged by many problems, the biggest of them being corruption and if proper attention is not given to address these issues the very foundation of democracy will be shaken in the country. “Educating the electorates to be more aware and conscious about politics, is one of the important tasks one has to undertake in order to uplift the living condition of the people,” he said. Highlighting on the campaign launched by him– Clean Politics Campaign, Basaiawmoit said the objective is to remove corruption, provide clean and good governance, improve the livelihood of the people and create awareness among the citizens about the political processes and other things concerning the State.
