TURA: Extending its support to JAC, Phulbari in their stand against influx, the GSU, Tikrikilla Regional Unit has urged the State Government and District Council to act swiftly to put an end to the fast rising influx problem in the plain belts of Garo Hills.

Terming the illegal settlers as ‘a threat to the local residents’ , the GSU said that the Government, along with the GHADC and the people should put up a strong resistance to ward off influx.

Warning corrupt Nokmas and gaonburas, GSU said that the Nokmas should not issue any certificates like Nokma documents, village character certificates etc. to newcomers or illegal migrants which will help them obtain voter identity cards and other such documents.

“Officials of the GHADC should also verify and confirm before authorising or issuing any documents and that GHADC should cautiously check transferring of any land to non-tribals as it is prohibitory under the purview of Meghalaya Land Transfer Act 1972,” Walseng Sangma, GSU president (Tikrikilla) said.

Informing that there are many easy passages for illegal migrants to enter the State, the Union stated that illegal influx in the plain belts of Garo Hills has given rise to serious problems.

Meanwhile the GSU appreciated the cooperation of the villagers of Bogularbhita, Khamari and Williampur who helped the Union in checking illegal settlements, purchasing of their land by unknown persons, possession of illegal documents etc in their respective villages.
