SHILLONG: Ri-Bhoi administration has tightened the security in the district following torching of forest beat office of the Assam government by Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) members on Monday night.

“The police are on the job to arrest the NGOs members who set on fire the forest beat office of the Assam Government,” Ri-Bhoi district Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep said on Tuesday.

He also informed that additional police force had been deployed in the area to contain the situation and see that there was no flare-up.

It may be mentioned that around 30 HANM members set to fire the forest beat office at Umthana village in Ri-Bhoi district on Monday night. They asked the security staff to evacuate the post before setting it ablaze.

HANM leaders alleged security personnel posted at the beat office used to demand money from vehicles passing through the area.
