SHILLONG: The city police on Sunday managed to nab five members of an organised gang involved in the lifting of Bolero vehicles from various parts of the city.

The five members of the organised gang who have been arrested are Nongthongbam Sanatemba Singh of Lakhipur (Cachar) Assam, Heru Das of Silchar, Rahim Rakuni alias Amit Das of Tripura, Jeetu Das alias Naba Das of Karimganj, Assam and Raju Das of Bongaigoan, Assam.

Additional SP (Crime) Vivek Syiem informed that a special police team had laid a trap at Rilbong locality in the city on Sunday morning, to nab the car lifters when the police team intercepted a metallic green coloured Bolero (ML05 E 4662) belonging to one John Langstieh, which was stolen from Last Stop area, Laban on Friday last.

Syiem also informed that two of the accused – Veeru and Sanatemba – tried to flee away on seeing the police team, but were apprehended after a chase.

Police later arrested Rahim, the driver of a local taxi (ML05 D 6602), Jitu Das and Raju Das, based on information provided by Veeru and Sanatemba.

Syiem informed that Rahim, who was staying in a rented house at Harisabha, Laban was providing shelter to the other members of the gang.

“They are a gang of eight members. We have managed to nab five while three are still at large,” he said.

Police have seized fake registration certificates, insurance certificates and five mobile phones from the gang members.

Syiem informed that the gang had managed to lift four boleros since June.

Out of the four boleros, two have been recovered. The first one was abandoned and the second was recovered by a team of the special cell from Rilbong in the wee hours of Sunday.
