TURA: After being given a severe drubbing at the hands of the public of Garo Hills in May when thousands of people stood up against the militant diktats of the GNLA during its proposed 300-hour bandh, the very same banned outfit is once again trying to unleash its reign of terror.
This time the GNLA has begun targeting school teachers dedicatedly working in the rural areas and the Meghalaya government, especially the state police force, has been unable to contain the violence.
On Thursday night the militants committed a heinous crime by executing a young Science teacher in Resubelpara simply because they believed he was close to the government authorities.
The GNLA militants, assisted by overground workers from within the same village, entered the home of 32-year-old Denybirth G Momin and in the presence of his wife and two young children dragged him away to the village road where they shot him dead.
To prevent public anger and retribution the GNLA militants left behind a note branding him a government collaborator.
The allegations leveled by the GNLA outfit against the young teacher who has been well respected by the student fraternity of Resubelpara and Mendipather was too shallow for anyone to believe.
“Everyone knew that late Deny was a young man who loved to be with his family and friends. He was an ardent cricketer and getting involved with the serious matters of the State was the last thing on his mind. The GNLA used the excuse to kill him,” was the response from most of the villagers of Resubelpara who attended the funeral of Denybirth G Momin on Friday evening.
The response from the public and the teaching fraternity has been in support of Denybirth Momin who not only was a Science teacher giving his time for young students preparing for higher education examinations. He was also a successful rubber plantation owner that was the envy of many including GNLA militants who wanted to get a portion of the revenue from the plantation.
The manner in which the militants executed the young teacher who was a father of two young children has been strongly criticised and condemned by the general public.
“This just shows the true colours of GNLA and its chief Sohan D Shira. They do not fight for Garos but for themselves. They are just a bunch of petty criminals using threat and intimidation to get rich,” said some of the locals from Tura after getting news on the killing of Dennybirth Momin.
Two bodies recovered from GNLA execution site
Coming close on the heels of the inhuman killing of Science teacher Denybirth G Momin by GNLA in Resubelpara, the same outfit has committed another murder 18 kms away at a place called Rongrong where they have dumped the bodies of two civilians executed on Friday.
Police recovered the mutilated bodies of the two civilians from the village road at Rongrong early Friday morning. Both the victims had their hands tied and were tortured before they were killed in cold blood.
Four empty cases of AK rifles and two used 9 mm pistol cartridges were found at the site of the crime scene.
Police have identified one of the victims as Ringnang Sangma of Rongrong Tasekgre while the second victim is said to be a school teacher of Cheran Christian school from Pedaldoba, West Garo Hills.
The two were kidnapped by the militants a few days ago and were severely tortured before they were killed in cold blood.
The militants accused the two of extorting money in the name of the GNLA.
They also left behind a memory card which contained graphic video scenes of the torture. Two sets of fake GNLA letter pads believed to have been used by the deceased were left behind as evidence by the militants.
