Two held for demanding Rs 15 lakh from city lady

 SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police and Assam Police in a joint operation have arrested two persons Manoj Baishya of Jagiroad and Rama Biswas of Rehabari, Guwahati for allegedly demanding Rs 15 lakh from one Juli Deb of Shillong.

According to police, Juli Deb recently received phone call from two numbers — 09612169959 and 09508277488 – where the callers had demanded Rs 15 lakh from her.

They threatened to kidnap her daughter, who is studying in Pune if the demand was not met, police said

Acting on an FIR filed by Juli Deb, police launched a hunt for the callers. Acting on a tip off, Assam police first arrested Baishya from a flyover near Chandmari in Guwahati on Friday.

On the basis of confession made by Baishya, police later arrested his lady accomplice Rama Biswas from a house in BK Road, Paltan Bazar, Guwahati.

The duo was produced in court on Saturday. The court later remanded them to five-day police custody.
