Shillong: Normalcy is slowly returning to Khanduli — a village on the Meghalaya-Assam border in West Jaintia Hills, where clashes broke out on Saturday between two communities after some employees of the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) allegedly tried to forcibly erect electric poles in the area.
“As of now, the situation in Khanduli is well under control”, said Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Monday.
According to him, the situation is under control now after forces from the Meghalaya Police moved into the disputed area.
“The Assam government has agreed not to go ahead with the erection of electric poles following intervention by the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills district,” the Home Minister said adding that the Assam government would have to take permission of the State government before taking up any developmental work in the disputed area.
“For any development to take place in the disputed areas, both the state governments had agreed to inform the respective Deputy Commissioners, but in this case the Karbi Anglong Deputy Commissioner failed to inform the West Jaintia Hills administration,” he said.
Meanwhile, condemning the incident, People’s Movement has decided to visit the area on August 17 to take stock of the situation.
