SHILLONG: Standing in long queues for hours at the District Transport Office (DTO) in order to get a vehicle registered would soon be a thing of the past as vehicles purchased from dealers in the city can now be registered online from the showroom itself.
Under the new system, procedures related to vehicle registration, such as entry of vehicle detail, owner’s detail, online payment of registration fee and road tax will be done by the dealer through the net-banking facility with State Bank of India (SBI).
Timothy Dkhar, a senior technical director at NIC, Meghalaya, while speaking on the new initiative said that the car dealers would apply for the registration certificate which will help the DTO to process the papers faster.
“It will also reduce the sufferings of people who have to wait for hours in the DTO to process their papers,” he added.
As per the new system, an e-receipt will be generated by the system along with the Form 20 (for vehicle registration) once a new buyer applies for registration certificate online. The car dealer will then hand over the Form 20, the e-receipt and the sale letter from the company to the owner following which the latter will remit the amount required to apply for the certificate to the concerned dealer.
The owner though has to present all documents such as vehicle insurance and address proof to the car dealer and on completion of the process, all the relevant documents are to be furnished at the DTO during the time of obtaining the registration certificate.
It is learnt that all the motor dealers in the city have been asked to implement the new system but so far only one has initiated the same.
The DTO witnesses a huge rush of applicants who throng the office counters right from morning. Hence, proper implementation of the online registration system can go a long way in easing the woes of car owners in the city.
Meanwhile, online payment of road tax for commercial vehicles has also been introduced in the city.
The service will enable the commercial vehicle owners to pay the road tax using net-banking facility with SBI after logging into the official website https://vahan.meg.nic.in.
The senior official also said that the NIC and Transport department will also implement a system where applicants can apply for learner’s driving license online.
“We plan to start the service by October this year as it is currently under process,” the official added.
