New Delhi: A suspended Delhi Police official has been sentenced to four years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 by a court here for taking Rs 10,000 as bribe from a lawyer to act upon his complaint of forgery.

Special CBI Judge Dharmesh Sharma ordered jail term for suspended Assistant Sub-Inspector Tej Singh, then posted at a police station in South West Delhi, for demanding and taking bribe from complainant Rajesh Kumar to act upon his complaint that in a property dispute case, pending in court, the other party had filed fake documents.

The special CBI court found 57-year-old Singh guilty under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act relating to public servant taking bribe and abusing his official position.

“There is no gainsaying that police is one department that has wide degree of interface with the people and demands high integrity.

It is policemen like the convict driven by greed that give a bad reputation to the entire police force and erode the confidence of the people in the system of administration of criminal justice,” the court said.

The case dated back to February 2009 when Kumar, a lawyer, used to meet Bindapur police station officials regarding the property dispute of his client in which the tenants were not paying rent and had forged the documents.

Kumar said when no development took place in the case for seven months, he again met ASI Tej Singh, who said the property was worth several crores and he would settle the case for money.

He then approached the CBI and told them that Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 in advance and rest Rs 20,000 later for pursuing his case. (

On Kumar’s complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught Singh red-handed while accepting Rs 10,000. Singh sought leniency on medical ground and also pleaded with the court not to convict him so that his service and pension benefits do not get forfeited. (PTI)
