Exorbitant hike in transits challan

JOWAI: The Jaintia Hills trucks owners’ Association (JHTOA) has set a 10 days ultimatum against the government to reduce the cost of transit challan for transporting coal outside the state that was hiked a few months ago.
The decision of setting the 10 day deadline to the government was taken at a meeting of the association held on Saturday last.
According to JHTOA President, Helping Phawa, the Transits challan for transportation of coal from Jaintia hills to outside the state was hiked from Rs. 290 to Rs. 675 per metric ton.
A truck that transports 9 metric ton of coal to Beltola, Assam has to pay Rs. 6075. Earlier the cost of transits challan was only Rs. 2620 for the same quantity of coal transported.
“The steep hike in the challan rate has badly affected truck owners in particular and the drivers community in whole”, Phawa said.
“The JHTOA President informed that if the government failed to respond within 10 days, the JHTOA will organize an indefinite strike”, he added.
