Guwahati: BJP on Wednesday demanded the dismissal of Tarun Gogoi-led Assam government for its alleged failure in maintaining the law and order.
“The Tarun Gogoi government has lost control over the situation. Gogoi is not ruling the state. Assam is now being run by fundamentalists, extremists, anti-socials and lumpen elements,” BJP national Vice President Bijoya Chakraborty told reporters here.
“Gogoi’s government should be dismissed…The sooner Gogoi is removed the better,” the Lok Sabha MP said.
Chakraborty said “The Centre can impose President’s rule keeping the legislative assembly under suspended animation.”
Terming the current situation as “anarchy”, she said it would only worse if the government remained in power.
The BJP leader said Tuesday’s violent incidents during the 12-hour statewide bandh called by the All Assam Minority Students’ Union (AAMSU) had laid bare the helplessness of the state government.
“Tuesday’s events have proved that Assam does not have a government but only ministers. The police is powerless to act. Even though Gogoi is a three-time chief minister, he has lost the will to rule,” Chakraborty said.
“If the Assam government had been led by any other party instead of the Congress, by now it would have been dismissed,” she added.
The BJP leader also called upon the government to ban the AAMSU.
“A reign of terror was let loose by AAMSU during Tuesday’s bandh. The government should ban AAMSU without wasting any more time… Any organisation which tries to disrupt peace and bring discord among sections of people should be banned,” she said.
Chakraborty said the kind of violence which occurred during Tuesday’s bandh was unprecedented in the history of Assam.
“The war cry of violent mobs was out in open. AAMSU’s bandh has disrupted the social fabric of the state. They did not even spare journalists,” she said.
Reacting to Gogoi’s charge that BJP is making provocative statements and inflaming passions, Chakraborty said “Gogoi has himself admitted that he does not read newspapers or watch television. So how does he know what statements we have made.
“Instead of blaming BJP and other parties, the chief minister should do his duty to bring back peace and normalcy,” she said. (PTI)
