Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu: Strongly condemning the Minister of State for Defence Pallam Raju’s remarks that India would continue to train Sri Lankan Army men despite protests from Tamil Nadu, the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) on Wednesday urged the Centre to ‘respect sentiments of Tamil people and to send back the Lankan military personnel being trained here.’

‘The people of Tamil Nadu are frustrated and outraged by the callous attitude of the Indian government in persistently giving training to Sri Lankan armed forces, which killed more than 500 Tamil Nadu fishermen and inflicted critical injuries to more than 2,000 fishermen,’ said Dr M H Jawahirullah, President of Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), alleged.

In a statement here, Mr Jawahirulla, who represents Ramanathapuram Assembly Constituency, said despite repeated objections from the people of Tamil Nadu and political parties, the Defence Minister’s contention that Sri Lankan was a friendly nation and India would provide training was not acceptable.

“This shows total insensitivity on the part of Indian government towards the sentiments of Tamil people and it amounts to stabbing the Tamil people from back, he averred.” (UNI)
