Pnars, Karbis constitute peace committee

JOWAI: A peace committee comprising members from two communities — Pnars and Karbis — residing on Meghalaya-Assam border in Khanduli area of Jaintia Hills and Myn-ih area of Karbi Anglong district was constituted on Thursday.

The peace committee was constituted in a public meeting attended by over thousand Pnar people and more than 300 Karbis.

The decision to constitute the ‘Pnars-Karbis (Khanduli & Myn-ih area) Peace Committee’ was taken in the meeting with a view to maintain peace and tranquility in the border area.

It was pointed out in the meeting that farmers of Khanduli area could not go to work in their paddy fields located within Karbi-Anglong District particularly in Umpawieng area and the same for Karbi people they could not come over to Khanduli market which is the most important market in the area.

Even the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) has suspended the bus service between Jowai to Hamren via Khanduli.

The meeting decided to end all differences to live in a peaceful atmosphere.
