SHILLONG: The breakaway faction of Achik National Vlounteer Council (ANVC-B) has alleged that Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma is protecting the GHADC CEM Purno K Sangma.
Stating this, Nawang K Sangma, the chief of the outfit’s anti corruption wing, in a statement issued here on Thursday said that the ANVC-B has resorted to series of agitational programmes demanding resignation of GHADC CEM.
The militant group has called a ‘council bandh’ from Friday demanding resignation of Sangma and his deputy Brigady Marak .
The outfit has accused the GHADC chief of siphoning off money collected at the Council toll gates.
“Purno K Sangma on Wednesday met the Chief Minister where Dr Sangma asked the GHADC chief not to resign and assured necessary protection,” the statement added.
The outfit has also demanded dissolution of the GHADC executive committee.
Meanwhile, Purno K Sangma has sought security from the state government following threat ANVC-B.
The CEM met Home Minister H D R Lyngdoh and sought security from the government as well as steps to ensure that there was no disruption in the GHADC administration.
During the meeting, Lyngdoh assured to provide security to the CEM, adding the government was closely monitoring the activities of the militant outfit.
“Asking the CEM to quit is not a wise idea. The government has instituted a commission of inquiry headed by retired judge P G Agarwal to inquire into the financial irregularities in the council. The inquiry is on and let the report come out first,” the Home Minister said.
After meeting the Home Minister, the CEM told reporters he has urged the government to see that the ANVC-B do not take law in their own hands.
Sangma also said he had also spoken to the DC and SP of West Garo Hills district as well as DC and SP of other districts in Garo Hills region, requesting them to handle the present situation. (With inputs from UNI)
