SHILLONG: Bringing forth the plight of the flood victims to the notice of the House, State Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma said that the flood victims in various parts of West Garo Hills have not received the relief materials sanctioned by the government.
“Being a representative of one of the constituencies which has been affected by the flood, I can confidently say that the villagers have not received the relief materials,” Sangma who represents Selsella constituency said during the Question Hour of the Assembly Session on Wednesday.
While urging the government to assess the situation at the earliest, Sangma suggested setting up of a mechanism to ensure flood victims are not at the receiving end in future.
NCP member James K Sangma asked whether the Government is contemplating to provide cash relief to the flood victims.
Sayeedullah Nongrum of the Congress wanted to know whether the Government was contemplating to construct new structures for the victims who have lost their houses. He also urged the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Prof RC Laloo to visit the area to assess damages caused by the flood.
In his reply, Prof Laloo said that a total 1, 09,397 people were affected by the flood in West Garo Hills and 15 temporary relief camps were set up to rehabilitate the flood victims.
“The government had sanctioned relief materials for distribution to the people,” he said.
Prof Laloo however said that the government does not have any proposal at present to provide cash relief to the flood victims.
The Revenue and Disaster Management Minister also informed that the government is currently surveying the assessments of damages submitted by the various departments.
