SHILLONG: GNLA chief Champion R Sangma was once again remanded in 14-day judicial custody after he was produced before the Court of the Judicial Magistrate here on Friday.
This is the third time that the former DSP turned militant chief has been remanded in 14-day judicial custody.
The GNLA chief was brought to the court under the tight security of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).
The Court also reserved its order on a bail plea sought by Champion’s legal counsel Sujit Dey on Friday.
Dey also moved a petition seeking permission from the Court to allow him to meet his client in custody so that he could be briefed on the case.
Pleading the court to grant bail to Champion, Dey said, “My client is an ex DSP and a permanent resident of Songsak and he has also taken an undertaking that he will not abscond and will fully cooperate with the investigating officer and appear before the Court whenever called.”
However, the Public Prosecutor objected to Champion’s bail application saying that the police have already filed a charge sheet in one of the ten cases registered against the GNLA chief.
The Public Prosecutor also argued that Champion is the chairman of the banned GNLA and his release on bail would pose a threat to the internal security in the State.
