Shillong: The Meghalaya Forum of Former MLAs have expressed their disappointment over the unabated and unregulated mining of sand and stone in the upper reaches of the Umtyngar and Mawjrong regions causing heavy silting in the Mawphlang Dam.

The forum which met on Friday, raised concerns over pollution of the Greater Shillong Water Dam stating that it could endanger the well being of the many citizens.

Meghalaya Forum of Former MLAs president SD Khongwir has stated that some reliable experts has claimed that such silting within the range of 10 (Ten) years or so will render the Dam non-functional. “One can well imagine an alarming situation of mass exodus of population in search of water elsewhere”, Khongwir stated.

The forum also stated that the PHE Department is well aware of the impending danger, but is yet to arrive at any concrete solution to save the Dam.
