SHILLONG: Social Organisations of Meghalaya Against Land Alienation (SOMALA) has reiterated its opposition to the State Government order for revoking its earlier executive order as far as setting up of educational institutions and universities in the State is concerned.

The State Government, on March 30, had issued an Executive Order which put on hold the transfer of land to non-tribal entities as per the Meghalaya Land Transfer (Regulation) Act, 1971.

However, the Government on August 24 last issued another order revoking the earlier Executive Order.

In a letter submitted to the Minister in charge Revenue and Disaster, Prof RC Laloo, here recently, the SOMALA, while referring to an earlier Supreme Court ruling, stated that the apex court judgement sought total ban on transfer of land by tribals to non-tribals in the Sixth Schedule areas.

The SOMALA also raised question on the Single Window Agency to look into land transfer cases headed by the Chief Minister and reiterated that the role should have been played by the traditional institutions and land owners.
