Guwahati: The main accused in the July 9 Guwahati molestation case, Amarjyoti Kalita, was on Thursday granted bail by a bench of Gauhati High Court here, making him the last of the 16 accused in the case to procure bail.

A single-bench of Justice PD Agarwal accepted Kalita’s bail plea, though certain conditions, like restriction in his movement outside the city, were imposed.

Kalita was granted bail in the two cases registered against him – one by the victim’s family and another by police.

Kalita is the last among total 16 accused in the molestation case to procure bail.

The hearing of the case will commence on September 18 and the court is expected to dispose the case at a fast pace.

A girl was groped and molested by a gang of bystanders, many in an inebriated state, when she was coming out of a pub after a party with friends at about 2100 hours on June nine on the main GS Road area of the city.

The television footage of the incident had sent shockwaves across the nation.

A SIT is investigating the incident, while a CID probe into the alleged role of a section of electronic media, particularly a private television channel, in the entire matter has also been ordered.

Kalita, the prime accused, had surrendered at Varanasi on July 23 last, while the rest, including a local television journalist, were arrested in Guwahati. (UNI)
