NONGSTOIN: The Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Nongstoin was inaugurated about a quarter of a century ago, but alas the institute remains but in name only.
The institute was inaugurated in a rented apartment initially and continues to be functioning the same way. It may also be mentioned that the institute began with the introduction of two trades namely Wireman and Carpentry.
The people of Nongstoin township have waited for over 25 years for the Govt to bring about some changes but the wait so far has been in vain.
Young people who opted out from school a

nd chose to take up another career are left with only two options – wireman and carpentry. Those desiring to become an automobile mechanic, electrician, plumber, draftsman, stenographer, surveyor etc , courses which this institute could have otherwise provided, are left disappointed and have to compromise their career with the ones that the institute offers.
Students who want to go to Shillong have to face many difficulties. Firstly, they have to face greater competition there.
Adding to this, there is the problem of accommodation and finally, expenditure.
A responsible youth leader of the District stated “The District has got a lot of potential but is marred by the lack of infrastructure and the lack of guidance from the political leaders.
The people choose their representative but not the leader who can legislate and make laws, policies etc on behalf of the state and the area in particular.”
The people of West Khasi Hills District have thus urged upon the government to ensure that the Industrial Training Institute at Nongstoin is provided with additional trades.
They also urged the Govt to construct a building for the ITI at a proper place as the rented building in which the Institute is functioning currently is located in a very congested locality which is unhygienic for the students, the instructors and the staff of the Institute.
