SHILLONG: Union Minister of State for Rural Development Agatha Sangma will take up the issues plaguing the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) with the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Miss Sangma, who visited NEIGRIHMS on Saturday, expressed concern over poor functioning of the institute.
“The institute has only an ad hoc Director,” she told reporters.
Though the equipments are there, there is a shortage of faculty and doctors. Moreover, several beds are lying empty, Sangma said.
According to her, it was after getting several complaints from various quarters that she decided to visit the Institute.
“I will meet the Union Health Minister in Delhi and submit a report on the current situation,” Sangma added.
The MBBS degree to be conferred by NEIGRIHMS is yet to get the recognition from the Medical Council of India. The issue was earlier taken up by the chairman of NECCC, DD Lapang with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi .
The first batch of students would complete their five-year course by end of this year even as recognition of their degree by the Medical Council of India still remains a question to be answered.
An MCI team recently conducted an inspection of the institute, but is yet to make any announcement as far as granting recognition is concerned. Due to this, a simmering discontent prevails among the students of the institute.
