SHILLONG: UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh has expressed his disappointment with the progress of the Khyndai Lad beautification project even as he questioned the quality of the work in implementation of the project.

“It is really shocking that the project is being implemented in a very pathetic manner. Both PWD and MUDA have failed to take any steps to ensure that there is no compromise in the quality,” Lyngdoh said after leading a delegation of the UDP Shillong City Khyndai Lad members to inspect the construction site of the Khyndai Lad beautification project here on Saturday.

He further said that the two departments have also been very tardy in implementing the project resulting in the deadline being extended on more than one occasion.

“Taking into the account the present status of the project, I would not be surprise if the project continues to linger for many years,” the UDP working president said.

He also said that the UDP Shillong City unit would find out details of the project before they officially write to both PWD Minister HDR Lyngdoh and Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.

During the inspection, the UDP members had an interaction with the residents of Police Bazaar who expressed their grievances over the delay in completion of the project.

Besides Lyngdoh, other UDP leaders who were part of the inspection team included UDP Shillong City general secretary Allan Dkhar, former MDC HL Massar and others.

Earlier, it was reported that the Government had issued fresh deadline to complete the project in July 2013. This is the second extension to the deadline for completion of the project.

The project, launched last year with much fanfare by Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, was to have been completed before the onset of the monsoon season, but as delays started cropping up, the Government extended the deadline to October 2012, which has now been further extended to July 2013.

The unsteady progress of the project coupled with the rains has only worsened the situation in Khyndailad much to the dismay of the pedestrians.

Sources said that the work is not making enough progress since the stretch is packed with pedestrians throughout the day and the construction work could be carried out only at night time.
