SHILLONG: The issue of GNLA’s offer to support Congress in the upcoming Assembly election will dominate the Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting of the UDP scheduled for September 26.
“A militant outfit openly declaring support to a political party in an election is a serious issue. We all know that money power and militancy could play a crucial role in an election,” UDP’s working president Paul Lyngdoh said here on Sunday.
Lyngdoh said the party would not allow such a dangerous trend to prevail in the State while adding that the democratic practices should not be allowed to be disturbed.
“We would discuss this issue in the September 26 meeting,” he said.
GNLA chief Champion R Sangma recently declared that the outfit would support Congress except in two constituencies in the upcoming 2013 Assembly elections.
The CEC would also discuss on the issue of having a pre-poll alliance with the other political parties, he informed.
Earlier, NPP supremo Purno A Sangma had expressed his keenness of having a pre-poll alliance with the UDP and all the non-Congress forces.
According to Lyngdoh, the CEC is also expected to discuss various aspects on strengthening the frontal wing of the party in view of the upcoming election.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh also informed that the State Election Committee (SEC) is also expected to meet on October 25 to finalise candidates for few more seats.
He also hinted that the issue for allotment of ticket for the prestigious Nongthymmai constituency may also come up for discussion.
It may be mentioned that there are two contenders for the party ticket —- Dr Jemino Mawthoh and sitting MDC Latiplang Kharkongor.
Kharkongor has the backing of Lyngdoh, while Dr Mawthoh has the support of another UDP working president Bindo Mathew Lanong.
Earlier, Lanong had hinted that Dr Mawthoh is leading the race since the Nongthymmai UDP circle has forwarded his name to the SEC.
