Nagaland has 87,541 government employees

Kohima: The total number of Nagaland government employees in state as on March 31, 2009, reported by the various departments comes to 87,541 which is 4.40 per cent of the total provisional population of the state.

According to the report compiled by State’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics, class I comprised 3561, Class-II 2400, Class III- 59044 and Class -IV 22536.

Class IV employees constitutes 25.74 per cent of the total government employees. Naga employees constituted 92.59 per cent of the total employees and the remaining 7.41 per cent of the total employees were non-Nagas.

The total strength of the employees increased to 87,541 in 2009 from 86, 535 in 2008 indicating an increase of 1006 employees over the period of one year. The percentage was 1.15 per cent more than preceding year. The report said female play an insignificant role as government employees in all categories except Class III service.

The strength was 688, 424, 13085 and 3940 in Class I, Class II, Class III and Class IV respectively, representing 19.32 per cent, 17.67 per cent, 22.15 per cent and 17.48 per cent of the total employees.

Christians constituted 92.73 per cent of the total employees with 6.41 per cent Hindus, 0.13 per cent Muslims and 0.73 per cent belonging to other religion during the reference year.

There are as many as 81115 scheduled tribe employees in the state constituting 92.66 per cent of the total number of employees in this year. The percentage share of schedule tribe employees in Class I, Class II, Class III and Class IV service in this year were 92. 39 per cent, 93.85 per cent, 93. 85 per cent and 89.52 per cent respectively in the respective cadres of services.

The different classes of employees are distributed in 12 basic pay groups. It is observed that 11.55 per cent of the employees during this year received basis pay less than Rs.2550 per month.

Of the remaining 83.50 per cent received basic pay less than 8500 per month and the remaining 4.95 per cent received basic pay of Rs 8500 and above. The available data indicate that 67.48 per cent of the employees were 45 years of age and below. The remaining 18.65 per cent of the employees fall in the age group of 46 years and above.

In Class IV there were 1762 employees who were illiterate. 87.30 per cent of the posts were non-plan and 12.70 per cent were plan post. Kohima district has the highest number of employees due to the location of civil secretariat and offices of the head of departments and Kiphire district has the lowest number of employees.

Also, Nagaland Minister for Urban Development and Higher and Technical Education Shurhozelie Liezietsu had moved the introduction of the North East Christian University Bill, 2012 in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Friday and was passed on Saturday. The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) with 6000 plus Baptist churches, in collaboration with Council of Baptist Churches in north-east India proposes to set up the North East Christian University.
