SHILLONG: The sitting UDP MDC of Nongthymmai, Latiplang Kharkongor has finally decided to withdraw from the race for the party ticket to contest the upcoming Assembly election from Nongthymmai constituency.

Kharkongor took this decision following his meeting with the UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy on Wednesday.

Confirming this, UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said now the party ticket for the Nongthymmai constituency would go to Dr Jemino Mawthoh who had earlier contested the 2008 Assembly election on the NCP ticket.

Lyngdoh said that Kharkongor has been elevated to the post of vice president of the party.

Earlier on Tuesday, the party State Election Committee (SEC) had deferred the matter of allotment of ticket for Nongthymmai constituency to its meeting scheduled for October.

Political observers see this new development as a victory of senior UDP leader BM Lanong who is said to have been rooting for Dr Mawthoh, even while Paul Lyngdoh fully supported Kharkongor’s candidature. Both Lanong and Lyngdoh are working presidents of the UDP. Lanong finally has the last laugh since he has been openly campaigning in favour of Mawthoh for the party ticket
