SHILLONG: Giving a new twist to the alleged bribery scandal, the staff of Shillong Central Jail dragged the wife of Director General (Prison) Kulbir Krishan to the picture saying “she has been running a parallel administration from the official residence of her husband”

“She, on several occasions, issued notices with regards to suspension and termination of services of jail staff by forging the signature of DG (Prisons) Kulbir Krishan,” one of the jail staff Richard Synrem said claiming that he was witness to it.

While pointing out that he failed to understand how the wife could perform the duties of the DG (Prison), Synrem told newsmen on Monday that even the duties of the jail staff were fixed by Krishan’s wife.

“The wife has been looking after jail administration since Krishan took over as DG (Prisons). This has been an open secret,” he said.

Another jail staff Michael Dympep said that they (jail staff) were ready for an independent inquiry on the allegation the staff took money from GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma’s lawyer Sujit Dey.

While admitting that they were a few staff who were bribed by Fullmoon Dhar who escaped from Shillong district jail on May 31 2009, he said that all those were under suspension.

Taking a dig at the DG (Prison), he said ‘Normally only few selected staff are allowed to enter the high security area. But he (Krishan) has allowed unauthorized person namely one Rotash Kumar to visit the high security area.

While informing that the DG (Prison) has introduced a new system where they would take the photographs of persons who visit the jail, he said, “We were also not allowed to take the photograph of Kumar, when he visited the cell where the GNLA chief Champion Sangma is kept”.

The jail staff also reiterated that they would continue to demand for removal of DG (Prisons).

“We have given ten days time to the Government to remove him,” he said.
