SHILLONG: A major disaster in the heart of the city was averted when a truck (NL01G 9245) dashed against the wall near Military Hospital on Tuesday evening.

The truck also uprooted an electrical pole, resulting in short circuit creating huge flames that lasted for a few minutes.

Police informed that the truck, loaded with cement was proceeding from Lumshnong to Byrnihat, when the driver Abhishek Ghosh suffered an epileptic bout and lost control of the vehicle. Army personnel and traffic police rescued the driver and the handyman, despite the fire that had been caused due to the short circuit.

The injured persons were admitted at the hospital for treatment, while power supply was cut off for almost two hours in some localities of the city including Jhalupara, Rilbong, Nongthymmai and Keating Road.
