Two lakh cataract patients in Manipur

IMPHAL: About two lakhs of the entire population of Manipur is estimated to be suffering with cataract and this number is going to be escalated in due course of time, according to Dr Kh Palin, Chairman and Managing Director of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI).

The medical institute has also made a history by performing the highest number of cataract operations in a single day with 82 patients operated on October 3.

He said RSBY card Smart Card holders can now avail of free treatment facilities in the departments of Eye, ENT, General Surgery, Dental, Urology and endoscopic procedures at Shija Hospitals.

Under the joint initiative of Shija Eye care Foundation, a unit of Shija Health Care and Research Institute, Langol and District Blindness Control Society, Thoubal district a free cataract detection camp was organized at Lilong Primary Health Centre (PHC) on September 29 where a total of 559 patients turned up for the camp out of which 294 cataract cases were detected on the spot, a statement of the private hospital said on Saturday.

Following the camp, two free cataract surgery camps have been organized at Shija Eye Care and Foundation. (NNN)
