SHILLONG: In a move to relax the recruitment procedure in the state police and bring transparency in the whole exercise, the state government has done away with the old system of measuring chest and weight of the candidates besides approving the Transparent Recruitment Policy (TRP) recently.
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, the State Director General of Police (DGP) N Ramachandran said the purpose of introducing TRP was to eliminate any suspicion of corruption or nepotism in the recruitment process in the state police.
“The department has already started recruiting cops as per the new policy,” the DGP added.
Speaking on other changes being implemented the DGP said, “From now on candidates will not have to go through grueling high and long jump sessions. Male candidates will have to run 10 kilometers in one hour while females will have to run 5.5 kilometers in 40 minutes.”
Recruitment through TRP involves the use of technological innovations to ensure objectivity and accuracy required to eliminate discretionary power of the recruiting officers as far as possible.
Under this policy, the state police will use technology such as radio frequency ID, which will be tied to the legs of candidates to directly convey the scores to the computer.
Also, a document would be given to each candidate at the end of every test indicating his performance and score in the test. The results of all the tests will be uploaded on the department’s website on a daily basis.
At present, the State police have 739 unarmed branch vacancies 503 armed branch vacancies and advertisement for the same has already been released.
According to Ramachandran, the interviews will also be done in such a manner that the five members of the Board will separately assign marks based on objective considerations and the final score will be conveyed to the candidates on the same day.
Home Guard volunteers, holders of ‘B’ and ‘C’ NCC certificates, children of non-gazetted police personnel of Meghalaya Police and sports persons who have represented the State at the national level will be given five bonus marks.
The official also informed that there will be a strong and effective grievance redressal mechanism and candidates will be allowed to approach the senior-most officer at the venue of recruitment in case of any complaints.
