SHILLONG: The UDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit has threatened to quit the party if the name of Dr Md Mizanur Rehman Kazi is not dropped from the party’s candidate list.

A senior UDP leader on Wednesday said that the party received a letter from Basaiawmoit expressing anguish over the selection of a non -tribal candidate from Garo Hills to contest the upcoming Assembly elections.

In the last state election committee meeting, the UDP leadership had cleared the name of Dr Kazi from Rajabala constituency.

According to the letter addressed to the party president Dr Donkupar Roy, the decision to allot ticket to Kazi was apparently due to the effort of UDP to portray the party as a regional outfit with a nationalistic outlook.

“However, I am of the opinion that spelling out our policy towards genuine non-tribal community is a better option. I want to make my point very clear that I have nothing against the genuine non-tribals of the State”, Basaiawmoit said.

The UDP leader also wanted the party leadership to convene a meeting to discuss the ideology and philosophy of the party.

Basaiawmoit also criticised the “empty threat’ of UDP to come out of the Congress-led coalition and said that this has affected the image of the party.
