SHILLONG: Congress on Monday received a jolt when former Nongpoh MLA Constantine Lyngdoh, who had defeated former Chief Minister DD Lapang in the 1993 Assembly election, resigned from the party to join the UDP.

In his resignation letter, Lyngdoh said he decided to quit the Congress due to some personal reasons.

Meanwhile, sources revealed that Lyngdoh decided to quit the Congress as he wanted to extend support to the UDP candidate for Umsning constituency FM Mawphniang in the upcoming Assembly elections.

When contacted, Ri-Bhoi UDP general secretary JD Muktieh informed that the former MLA along with his supporters would formally join his party in a function to be held at Nongpoh on October 24.
