SHILLONG: A seminar on Khasi language held at Lady Keane College discussed the need to make efforts to enrich the language.
As many as eleven colleges which participated in the discussion unanimously adopted the resolution urging the Centre to constitutionally recognize the Khasi language.
Among those who were present among others included Meghalaya People’s Human Rights Council (MPHRC) secretary general Dino DG Dympep, Khasi scholars Prof. MB Jyrwa and MS Kharsyntiew.
Dympep reminded that twenty seven countries had pledged their support to the movement which has been demanding recognition to Khasi language.
Dympep who recently participated in the debate of the 21st session of the United Nations Human Rights in Geneva said that countries like Mexico, Guatemala and Ecuador have endorsed their support to engage themselves in a constructive dialogue with India for recognition of Khasi and other indigenous language “constitutionally”.
According to Dympep, the MPHRC would now engage itself in garnering support from all stakeholders in this regard as per the resolution passed by the UN Human Rights Council
He hoped that the resolution would also pave way for Garo language to get recognition.
