SHILLONG: Forest and Environmental Minister Prestone Tynsong has blamed the present land tenure system for the failure of many developmental projects to take off in the State.
“This (land tenure system) is the greatest bottleneck when it comes to implementation of the various laws and acts passed by Parliament and the state Assembly,” Tynsong said, addressing the valedictory function of Wildlife Week Celebrations at All Saint’s Cathedral Hall in the city on Tuesday.
He said, “Many of the projects proposed by the government cannot take off due to the peculiar mindset of the people that government would take an upper hand over their land which is not true at all.”
The government on several occasions could not submit utilization certificate (UC) to the ministry of Forest and Environment due to protests from traditional heads who weigh such projects as breach to their traditional rights.
“It is high time to make our state a model state by changing the whole system and change for a better Meghalaya,” Tynsong said.
He further appealed to people to work together with the government and create a balance stating that “It is our duty to create a peaceful atmosphere so that the co-existence of human species and other living species can go forward.”
He also stated that plans should be made accordingly as per the prevailing acts and rules passed by the parliament and state legislatures.
