SHILLONG: Irish Shullai Durga Puja Committee (ISDPC) president Sanbor Shullai said that the controversy regarding the misuse of the Seng Khasi Sacred flag by the puja committee is a political ploy to defame his image.

“With Assembly elections round the corner, this is definitely a political ploy against me,” Shullai who is also the Assembly Deputy Speaker said here on Thursday.

He however said that he would not like to hold any of his opponents responsible for this conspiracy again him.

“I cannot directly blame anybody since I do not have the proof. But the timing of this whole controversy is in itself a testimony that this was done to damage my character,” Shullai said.

Meanwhile, in a letter submitted to the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal on Thursday, ISDPC president said that the Seng Khasi flag as alleged was never used as symbol or otherwise during the three to four days of puja celebration.

“The puja committee in its meeting has never resolved to use any flag as symbols of any religions nor of any organisations as puja celebration are purely religious matters of the believers professing Hinduism,” Shullai said.

He further said that the allegations which were made by Seng Khasi Ri-Raid Laban about the use of Seng Khasi Sacred flag at the time immersion is totally baseless.
