Varsity cricket tourney kicks off

SHILLONG: The Inter College Cricket Tournament 2012 organised by the Sports Department, NEHU, began at the Shillong Cricket Association Cricket Ground, Polo.

Altogether 12 colleges from the state are participating in the tournament.

The first match was won by Tirot Sing College, Nongstoin, who defeated Raid Laban College by 11 runs.

Raid Laban won the toss and elected to field. Tirot Sing scored 108-4 in a truncated 20 overs match. Nicky Marwein scored a brisk 35 off 27 balls while Prakash Joshi took 2-10.

In reply, Raid Laban scored 97 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted overs. Robert Sangma scored 26 off 23 balls while Batskhem Nonsiej took 2-11.

In the second match, Kiang Nongbah College defeated Shillong Commerce College by virtue of the ‘Ball Out’ rule due to a heavy downpour in the late afternoon.

The next matches will see KL Bajoria College take on Umshyrpi College, while Synod College face Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh.
