SHILLONG: Police shot dead a GNLA cadre and arrested another following an encounter at Dolonggre in West Garo Hills on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the GNLA cadre identified as Watre Sangma was killed and another cadre, British Sangma, was caught after a gun battle at the village at around 12.30 pm.

A pistol and two hand grenades were recovered from the encounter site.

There is no let up in the activities of various militant outfits in Garo Hills.

Despite the claim of ANVC (B) that the militant group will not resort to violence, the cadres of ANVC (B) militants shot dead three civilians at Nangalbibra market in South Garo Hills on Saturday afternoon.

There were also a few cases of criminal activities involving ANVC (B) in the past.

The ANVC (B), however, denied its involvement in Saturday’s killing and wanted the police to make public the proof of ANVC (B)’s involvement in the crime.

Even after the ceasefire with the ANVC in 2004, the Garo Hills region has not witnessed peace as new splinter groups have emerged creating terror.

Both GNLA and ANVC (B) have cadres from the ANVC, currently under ceasefire.
