SHILLONG: The BJP, with an aim to capture Pynthorumkhrah seat, which it had lost after its lone legislator AL Hek joined the Congress, has decided to put up a strong candidate to take on Hek.

When asked who will be the candidate from BJP in Pynthorumkhrah, the BJP General Secretary, Dipayan Chakraborty on Sunday said that two young and dynamic persons from Pynthorumkhrah have applied for party ticket and a final decision will be taken shortly. According to Chakraborty, the people of Pynthorumkhrah had rejected the Congress way back in 1998 and they will repeat the same in 2013 and for this, the BJP is also banking on P2 mantra, but by this we mean ‘People and People’. “Because in democracy people are above all and it is they who choose their representatives”.

On the prospects of BJP in the coming elections, Chakraborty said that the party is working hard to win back the lost ground and “we are hopeful also to win a few rural constituencies this time”. The BJP had three MLAs in the State Assembly since 1998, but lost the seats over the years.

“We are committed to regain the lost positions and ground works in this regard are being initiated”, he said.

The BJP suffered a blow when Hek, who had contested the Assembly elections in 2008 on a BJP ticket, switched his allegiance to the Congress and became a minister in 2009.

Party sources also revealed that the BJP is also contemplating to fight most of the seats in and around Shillong and also a few seats in Jaintia Hills.
