Home Minister, DGP to assess law and order situation in Garo Hills

SHILLONG: Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh and DGP Kulbir Krishan will assess the law and order situation in Garo Hills at a security meeting in Tura on Wednesday in the context of stepped up violent activities involving various militant groups.

The meeting is likely to chalk out an action plan to deal with the growing insurgency in Garo Hills in the run up to the Assembly elections due for early part of next year.

The Home Minister informed on Monday that he and the DGP will hold the meeting with the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police of all the districts of Garo Hills to assess the security situation.

Besides the violent incidents being perpetrated by GNLA, another cause of worry for the police is the growing incidents involving ANVC (B) cadres.

Two political leaders – MPCC working president Deborah Marak and Community and Rural Development Minister Saleng Sangma – have come under the attack of ANVC (B) and GNLA militants respectively.

“At present the situation is under control and the scheduled meeting on Wednesday will further analyze the security requirements,” Lyngdoh said.

The Government recently enhanced security to political leaders and VIPs especially those from Garo Hills.

The Home and Political department officials, after a meeting held recently, enhanced the security of Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to the Z-plus category and accorded Z category for his wife along with Governor RS Mooshahary, Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, Cabinet Minister Saleng Sangma, Parliamentary Secretary in charge Home, Abdus Saleh, and MPCC president DD Lapang.

While Chief Secretary WMS Pariat and some legislators were placed under the X category, several others including MPCC working president Deborah Marak and Leader of Opposition Conrad Sangma were accorded Y category.
