SHILLONG: All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) secretary in-charge of Meghalaya State Poonam Rani Wangkhem said that the party is looking to improve its performance in Garo Hills.

“We are hoping to win more seats in comparison to the last Assembly election,” Wangkhem said while addressing newsmen here on Monday.

When asked how many seats they are expecting to win from Garo Hills, she said the party would like to win all the 24 seats from Garo Hills.

It may be mentioned that Wangkhem had has recently held a series of meetings with the women workers of the party in several constituencies of Garo Hills to help the party face the stiff challenge to be posed by former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP).

Wangkhem toured Mahendraganj from where Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s wife Dikanchi D Shira is contesting.

She also addressed a public meeting at Selsella which is an important seat for the Congress. Former Congress MLA Clement Marak would be contesting against leader of Opposition Conrad K Sangma who would be contesting on a NPP ticket from this constituency.

Meanwhile, AIMC secretary had also gone to address a public meeting at Rangsakona, a constituency where the Chief Minister’s younger brother and former MLA Zenith M Sangma would be contesting.

Wangkhem has also gone to address a Mahila convention at Mawshynrut Assembly Constituency under West Khasi Hills district. There was a massive turnout of not only women but also male voters from the different communities of the constituency.

The AIMC Secretary also addressed a huge gathering at the West Shillong Assembly Constituency located within the capital city of Shillong on the evening of December 16, 2012. The Congress leader exhorted the people to vote fearlessly during the elections and not to succumb to any kind of pressure.

Wangkhem would hold another two meetings at Mookaiaw and Raliang Assembly constituencies in Jaintia Hills on Tuesday before the Congress leader embarks on another tour of the state in January 2013.
